Green Thumb Sunday

It's Green Thumb Sunday, hosted by Tricia at As the Garden Grows. If you'd like to participate, just click on the link to find out how.

I went out into the garden today to check and see how the tulips were doing. They are about 4 inches high. I didn't take a photo, because tulips without blooms aren't much to look at. I was trying to decide what to post for Green Thumb Sunday, as I don't have a lot of indoor plants and I've shown you most of them. Meeko and I took a walk and we saw some shrubs beginning to bud, but they weren't very exciting either.

Finally I decided that I would show you come photos of my flower garden from last year. I love my red Oriental poppies. They grow every year and already the leaves are covering a spot about a foot across. Last year they didn't do very well because we didn't have enough water. One year I had 31 blooms on them and since then they just haven't been the same. I guess they overdid themselves. I had only three blossoms last year, but I do love them.
The blooms on these flowers are always big. I'm hoping that it does better this year and am going to pick up some fertilizer for it. Does anyone know what kind of fertilizer that Oriental poppies like?

The next photo is of my light pink peony. I have 3 peony bushes and the two that are in the same garden need to be separated, I believe. They have spread so much the leaves of the plants are touching each other.
I also have a hot pink and a dark red peony. Every year they bloom profusely and I love the fragrance. I would bring them into the house, but hubby is allergic to a lot of flower fragrances. They make a wonderful showing in the garden though.
After all the rain we got yesterday, it was a bright and sunny day here today, although the breeze definitely still had a bite to it. For some reason I was bored to death. Nothing appealed to me. I think it is because I've been having trouble sleeping lately. On Friday night I was just falling asleep and I heard a noise that woke me. After that, it was hopeless. I was still awake at 3:30 AM but must have finally went to sleep shortly thereafter. The night before that it was 3 AM. So today was a day of restlessness. I would have liked to have taken a nap, but knew if I did I wouldn't sleep tonight. But here it is just after midnight and I'm wide awake. I am going to go to bed though and hopefully once I relax the Sandman will come to visit.

Take care and have a wonderful Sunday. ~Blessings, Mary~

  1. I love flowers but, sad to say, I have the proverbial "black" thumb when it comes to gardening -indoor and outdoor, alike.
We have some crocuses that I think my Mom may have planted -not sure on that -but they come up faithfully, every spring, right under my front living room window and I love to see them start to poke through the soil as I know soon spring will arrive, in all its budding and blooming glory. My younger daughter is slowly catching a bit of the gardening (floral, that is) bug and has planted a couple of tulips out front too.
But at the backside of the house, there stands a very large peony bush -been there since my grandparents day -all my life at any rate -and that plant brings forth such beautiful blossoms, year after blooming year, and I love it for the beauty and also, for the memories it reinforces in my mind of my childhood, of my grandparents, of life in a different era -all very good things.

  3. Good Morning Mary,
I hope you have gotten some much needed sleep by now. I know what you mean by not getting enough sleep, as I have trouble sleep alot of nights as well. I enjoyed the pictures of your flowers from your Flower Garden from last year. They are very beautiful and I don't know much about outside flowers myself. I would like to get some and plant them in front of our house tho. I'll have to check with our Landlord to make sure he doesn't mind. I do love Tulips myself, but I think it's a bit late to plant them now tho. I enjoyed reading more on Brandon's Autism and the Autism in general. I love your Rooster from your Show & Tell Friday. It is beautiful and I do hope you find it. I have some Rooster's myself and a couple of them belonged to my Grandmother. When we first got married, I had my kitchen done in Rooster's and Watermelon's. Now, it's going to be done in Sunflowers. I have somethings for you on my post for today. I hope you will stop by to pick them up when you have time. Take care my friend and have a great day. May God Bless You and Yours.

    Love & Hugs,
    Karen H.

  4. Oh Mary, The Peony is my most favorite flower. My Grandma had them and my mom brought them to our yard when she died. My dad cared for them after my mom died. Now I have them in my yard after my dad died two yrs ago. They bloomed the first year after I planted them. They say it takes 3 years to bloom after replant. I have others that some of my seniors family's who I took care of gave me also, and they did take 3 years to bloom. I think my dad had a special word with our Lord to have them bloom for me right away. I cant wait to see them and smell them this year. Thanks for walking down memory lane with me.
    love

  7. Now this is really kinda ironic....my DAD loved poppies...and one of my mother's favorites were peonies! So, so pretty both of them. Y'know come to think of it, my dad's poppies were orange...I don't think I've seen red ones before?!! Seeds? :::hint::: LOLOL

You have a terrific day dear lady. I'm trying to update my virus and spyware protection today while watering outdoors. Kinda a lazy day.

Give Meeko a scratch behind his ears!!

  14. Hi Mary, you're not depressed are you. I was having sleep problems like that after my Mother died and the dr put me on an antidepressant.
Seems like I remember you mentioning one time that Karen might be moving away. Or did I dream that?
Now tell me about the poppies. Did you order the seeds from a mail order catalog?
They sure are pretty. Our garden sure has greened up. I have purple Iris blooming. It will be a while before the other colors bloom.
I'm going to get off of here and enjoy my grands and daughter.

  18. I'm amazed, I must say. Rarely do I come across a blog that's both
educative and engaging, and let me tell you, you've hit the nail on the head. The problem is something that not enough men and women are speaking intelligently about. I am very happy I came across this in my hunt for something regarding this.
