Quiet Sunday

Today was a quiet Sunday. We didn't do much until midafternoon. I had planned to go out and work a little clearing debris from my other flowerbeds, but the wind was brisk and cool. Since we have over a month before we can plant anything, I decided to forego that activity as last night I was coughing and today I had the sniffles. I don't want to get a cold at this time of year, so will wait for a nicer day to garden. However, I was a bit disappointed.

I've had some inquiries on how my knees are. I've quit taking all the prescribed medications. They weren't doing any good, so why take them. No more Cele*brex or Pen*nsaid. I found out I shouldn't be taking them with the med for my high blood pressure and stopped immediately on Easter weekend. Now I'm taking ibuprofen and using Methol*atum Deep Heating Ultra Strength rub. Since doing this, my knee pain is tolerable and not excruciating like it was. So, I was able to get out and do a little in the garden on Friday and take the boys and Dakota across the street to the park on Saturday. Thanks to Mari for her tip on keeping my legs elevated. This really helps. I can't sit at the computer for long periods of time though because my knee stiffens. I will catch up with everyone as I can.

We didn't do much today but laze around and then we went and got a few groceries this afternoon. That went quite well, though we spent about $20 more than I'd planned. Oh well, everyone has to eat. The one thing I wanted that I didn't get was a roasting chicken. They wanted $2.99 a pound. One lady asked them to weigh a chicken for her and it was over $16.00. She was appalled at the price and asked them to weigh a smaller one, which was only $12.00. Doesn't she realize that no matter the size of the chicken, she's paying the same price per pound? I would NOT pay $2.99 a pound for chicken if I never had it. I opted for chicken breasts that were only $1.69 a pound. Two large breasts cost me $7.49. To me that is much more reasonable and chicken breast is the best meat on the chicken. Doesn't make sense to me.

I made a nice macaroni salad for dinner. I added celery, carrots, tomatoes, a little onion, lettuce and some shredded cheddar cheese. It was delicious. I looked at green peppers at the grocery store but they were barely fit to eat and the price was atrocious, so I passed them by as well.

So all in all, it was a quiet, lazy day here. I watched a documentary on Tigers tonight and last night hubby and I watched Australia. Though it took me a while to get into it, the ending was fantastic. If you haven't seen it, be sure to do so. I also emailed Assignment # 3 of my writing course to my tutor. We will see what she has to say about it when it comes back. It was the story about my brother and I catching fireflies, which you can read HERE if you missed it.

Hope you all had a great weekend. ~Blessings, Mary~

  1. hey Mary, I'm praying here for you with your sore knees. Some days my knee gives way and hurts a little but I imagine it's nothing compared to what you're going through.

  2. Hope you're not getting a cold. Lots of tea with honey for you!
We watched a movie called "Flyboys" last night that is based on a true story about the first fighter pilots. Very very good. With your love of history, I'm sure you would enjoy it if you haven't yet seen this one.

  3. Hi Mary,
Glad you've gotten some relief from your knee pain. I couldn't get over the price of that roasting chicken. Seems way high. I bought whole (roasting) chickens for 69¢ per pound when they were on sale recently. I usually prefer the breasts too and $1.69 per pound is comparable to what we pay.
Your macaroni salad sounds good. It's hot here, so I'm thinking a pasta salad for tomorrow.

  5. I wanted to reword my comment so I deleted the first one. Have you thought of a laptop? You could sit with your legs elevated that way. RYC: Thanks! I'm not depressed though. I've been depressed in the past so I know that I'm not. I do appreciate your concern and thank you for your prayers.

  6. Like I just wrote in an email to you, chicken is way too high for when I remember once it was a cheaper cut of meat to buy....not any more.

And green peppers...ya, they're high in USA too. One needs a goodly sized patch of ground to raise our own veggies these days. But then again, water and feed and such....it's still not cheap, but oh....the taste of home grown. Yummy.

    Take care of yourself.

  7. You're right about it being a little early to get too serious about gardening. But it's hard not to get into it, eh? I'm glad you've found some relief from the pain.

  8. I think it's amazing that you can even do anything in the ground with your knees the way they are - you are a trooper.

Green peppers have been on sale here lately - wish I could send you some, since they and I don't get alone at all.

That chicken story was ridiculous - $3.00 a pound! Nuts! Breasts are high, too, but I buy them when they're BOGO.

Have a great week and come by then you can. I have another cold!

  9. I have been wanting to rent that movie so from your accounts seems like I should the next rainy day. I loved the photos of the boys playing with Dakota and the photo of you and Lynn is stunning. I hope you feel better soon. Peace

  10. Greetings Miss Mary,
I have read several articles that suggest we need to be our own doctors sometimes. We need to check things out and check with pharmacy for interaction.

I usually buy the frozen breast to have on hand. I also buy my whole chickens at Sam's Club where the price is wonderful. If you have a Sam's or Costco you can often find some really good deals.

Please take care, and good luck with your writing. Please remind me to send you some info I found on a site to submit your writing to.

  11. I took something for my arthritis for a while. But I couldn't really tell it helped so I quit. I've had arthritis for many years. It was diagnosed when I was only 29. I don't know how long I had it before then. My son said at that time, "Its an old peoples' disease". But you know, it isn't. Young people have it, they just don't talk about it much.
When I injured my back(the second time)they exrayed my hips before the MRI. There is arthritis there, also. And I'm sure it is in my knees. I feel that keeping mobile is the best thing one can do. Too many people sit down and don't get up. It only makes it worse. I'm glad you aren't doing that.
I'm surprised about the price of chicken. We have so many commercial growers here in the south, that chicken is relatively inexpensive. Certainly whole ones are cheaper than the breasts alone.
I'm happy you're seeing some improvement in your knee and that you've been able to do some things. Just don't overdo.

  13. Sometimes we all need a nice quiet weekend:-) I went to the auction yesterday but apart from that didn't do very much at all, all weekend. Today it's cold (4c) and raining so a perfect day to visit all my blogging friends!!

You are smart to have quit the prescribed medication for your knees if they weren't helping at all. So many of them have side effects anyway. Keep doing what you're doing now, especially if you can feel a difference!!

I know what you mean about a whole chicken being so expensive. I was looking to buy one the other day and they were about $20 for a small sized one, no way was I paying that!!! I prefer just to buy the breasts as well.

Hope your day is going well today, my friend. xoxo

  14. Quiet Sundays are always a good way to renew and re-energize. I'm sending you some {{hugs}} to help you beat that horrible knee pain and to make sure your sniffles don't lead to something more.

  15. We had a lazy Sunday too... after church and lunch we rode to the flower nursery to get tomato plants, but it was closed... so we ended up at the grocery store to get a few things (mostly snacks) and we discovered they had tomato plants for sale. My husband bought a few. He set them out in the garden while I read the newspaper. Then it was back to chruch again.. then tv and bed... a perfect lazy day!

  18. Mary,

The macaroni salad sounds sooo good, I love it, especially in the spring and summer.

I hope your knees will get better, I always use Ibuprofen for pain, it seems to work best for me.

The firefly post - your description is wonderful - makes me feel as if I am there with you. Great little story!

  19. Sounds to me like you're having the same issues with green peppers up your way as we are having down here! Prices outrageous and peppers kind of pock-marked (for lack of a better word there.) The son-in-law and I both like macaroni salad but the kids won't eat it even though macaroni is by far and away their favorite pasta plus Mandy doesn't like the "crunchy" fresh veggies and onions in salads like that so when I make it, it is pretty much a special treat for Bill and for myself. I wish this darned weather would soon stabilize though as it is constantly changing and wreaking havoc then with my back and my leg joints too!
    Peace.

  20. Sorry to hear that your knees are giving you such pain...I will bring that up to our Father. :)
I can't believe that your chicken is so expensive...it is just chicken!
Of course Keith would be happy never to have to eat chicken again...that is unless I served it fried with chocolate cake. Ha! Like either of us need that. :)
We watched Australia the other weekend. I had a little problem getting into it to...but loved the history of it.
Hope you are feeling better and that your sniffles cleared up.
    Love ya girl
