Lessons of Childhood

Last Tuesday night, Brandon and Jordan learned a lesson that many of us learned during our childhood. Their dog of 11 years, Buddy, collapsed and couldn't get up. The boys were at their friend's place and Michelle called them home. The vet said he would see the dog at 9:30.

Jordan chose to stay at home, but Brandon went along to the vets to keep Buddy company. The news wasn't good. Buddy had a giant mass in his stomach and it had ruptured. The vet offered treatment for $2,000, but even Brandon knew that it was far too much to pay when the dog was experiencing internal bleeding. He chose to have him euthanized.

Buddy died of the same thing that our Alaskan malamute, Meeko, died of. I wonder what is causing this type of cancer in dogs. Since Meeko passed two and a half years ago, I've heard of this same condition several times.

Brandon and Jordan are having a difficult time. They are missing Buddy terribly. Even I miss him. He always greeted me at the front door when I went in.

RIP, Buddy.

  3. Most definitely the loss of a beloved pet is a difficult thing -and not just to children but to us old folks as well! I remember, like it was yesterday, when the dog we'd had from when I was 6 months old died and I was 12 and I was crushed. A year later, I brought a puppy home -to my Mom's chagrin -but she gave in and let him stay. We had him for 5 years and that dog, believe it or not, I still mourn for him as my Duffy was the best mutt ever! And that was 48 years ago that he died. Since then, we have numerous dogs and cats come and go here and each time something happens to one of 'em, my kids and I still cry over the lost pet! They are part of one's family so how else should we react anyway?

  8. Hello dear Mary:-)

Such sad news about Buddy, my heart goes out to Brandon and Jordan. It's never easy losing a beloved pet and it had to be a very hard decision for Brandon to make. Life's lessons sometimes aren't much fun, are they!!

Mary, we do indeed need that get that phone call in. Have hardly been home lately, that's my problem! lol E is afternoons this week so will try to give you a call around 3:30 tomorrow. xoxo

  9. I think that was the sensible solution...so many spend thousands of dollars trying to prolong a pet's life...sometimes when a pet is suffering, it isn't fair to do this and it puts a strain on the family's resources....we've had to say goodbye to many animals through the years...
Thanks for stopping by Bears at Home. I've missed you.
I loved your header. did you do that one

  10. That is so sad.... sorry for the boys..... Life has hard lessons and it is hard for the youth. Our Zeke is 11 and Moses the Lovebird is 12...... I just hold my breath every day when I go to uncover Moses... Zeke has had to have about 10 small lumps removed but now has a very large on on his chest. Right now he is fine but he is getting old.. I wonder if it is worth getting attached to these pets... Hurt our hearts......

  11. Tell the boys that I'm so sorry, Mary....I know how it feels to lose a beloved pet...But I believe it was God's chosen time for Buddy to cross over the rainbow bridge - just like it was for my Angel...Still, it is hard. But they will meet their Buddy again someday...just like I will meet Angel again and you will meet Meeko. I'll be thinking of the boys and their lose - but will be happy for their new found friend in Cole.
