A Day on the Newport, Kentucky Levee.

Yesterday I promised to post pictures of the Levee in Newport, KY and a unique restaurant experience for the boys. I also posted a photo of Jordan heading to the Levee stairs. Below is a photo of the area decorated for Christmas. It was beautiful! You can see the stairs to the levee on the left.
The steel spanned bridge is the one that we drove over the previous night to get from Cincinnati, Ohio to Newport, KY. It was decorated with wreaths and bows for the Chrismas season. We were the only car on the bridge and for some reason Brandon thought we shouldn't be on it. The next morning after we had breakfast and went to the aquarium, we took the boys out to look at the river. This bridge was to our right. Notice the barge traveling down river.

Below is the view from the levee to the left. Another bridge. I believe the boat in the foreground is a restaurant. Dwight and I saw it when we visited three years ago. Nothing much has changed, but the river is amazing.

A wider angle of the scene to the left from the levee. The river looks like glass, but the current is very strong.

When we came finished looking at the river, we took the boys to the candy shop and bought some penny candy and got some for free because the boys had bought a mug with their names on it at the aquarium. I also picked up some sugar free chocolate there and Dwight bought some black licorice.

Then we headed to Johnny Rockets for lunch. Dwight and I had ate there when we visited three years ago. It's an old fashioned burger and malt place.

Though they usually don't let people take photos, the lady in the forefront of the photo below allowed me to so I could have a picture to put in the boys scrapbook of the trip. Notice the old time uniforms, the red stools and the floor, which is exactly like the one in the burger joint that was near my high school when I was a teen. It was like stepping back in time. We all ordered burgers except Jordan and he had grilled cheese and fries. The food was delicious. We put a nickel (yes a nickel) in the jukebox. The boys enjoyed the atmosphere. They thought it was cool to eat in a burger joint like Grandma and Grandpa went to in their teens.
As we were leaving the levee, we saw this old house that has been turned into an office building. Brandon wanted a photo of it. He said it must be very old and we tried to guess what year it had been built.
So that was our day on the levee. We left Newport around 2pm and the boys talked about the aquarium most of the day. Tomorrow I'll post photos of Jordan's favorite place in the Tennessee mountains.

Animated Dividers

Deena over at Can I Be Pretty In Pink honored me with two very special awards. Thank you, Deena. You made my day.

I will be adding awards to my awards and gifts page as soon as I can find time. I have to watch the boys after school today and am still settling in from the trip.

I hope you enjoyed seeing the photos of the levee and Johnny Rockets. If you're even in Cincinnati or Newport, be sure to see the aquarium and stop by for lunch at Johnny Rockets for a 50s burger joint experience. ~Blessings, Mary~

  4. Good Afternoon Mary,
Oh, I love the Newport Levee. I have been thru Cincinatti with DH before while out on the road with him. But being in a big truck, you just can't stop anywhere. I love how they had it decorated for Christmas. I love the pictures of the River also. I have crossed the Ohio River before as well. I bet Johnny Rocket's is a very neat place to eat at. "THANK YOU" for sharing your Newport trip with us. I am looking forward to the TN part tomorrow. Take care my friend and have a great day. May God Bless You and Yours. "THANK YOU" for the condolences of my Aunt. I talked to my Mom earlier today and the Funeral is going to be Wednesday Morning at 10:00a.m. I won't be able to go because I can't take the girls out of school and our oldest daughter has her first game in the Tournament Wednesday evening at 6:00p.m. My Parents will be leaving early in the morning going down there and will be back home late Wednesday evening.

    Love & Hugs,
    Karen H.

  5. Carolyn,

Thanks for the congratulations on all my awards. I will be passing them on in the next few days.

The boys were quite impressed with Johnny Rockets. They had never had such an experience before and for Dwight and I, it certainly is a walk down Memory Lane.

    Blessings,
    Mary

  6. Karen,

The Newport Levee is a beautiful place. It's very clean and the shops and mall there are wonderful. I had never heard of Mrs. Fields before. It was a breakfast place in the mall and they told us it is a franchise and found other places across the US. Everyone enjoyed their breakfast there and lunch at Johnny Rockets was wonderful.

I love the Ohio River and in 2005 we crossed the Mississippi when we visited friends in Arkansas. That was my first time to see the Mighty Mississippi. On the way home we went to Hannibal, Missouri. I love all of the southern states. We took a paddle wheeler ride on the Mississippi and I loved it. I have photos somewhere.

Take care, Karen. Again, my condolences on the passing of your aunt.

    Blessings,
    Mary

  7. Thanks for sharing the levee and your day there. Those are just the kinds of things I like to do when I travel. I would have gotten a photo of the house too. Usually, I take interesting houses, churches and anything else that strikes my fancy. I take it the Levee was like a boardwalk with the shops etc.

  8. We actually cross the Ohio three times before we get to my daughters house in Ky...it is a zig zaggy way that Hubby says is the quickest...

I've been to a Johnny Rockets in a Nashville TN mall...the servers would wait until a certain song and then they would all start dancing around the tables...it was great fun!

  9. Oh my, I just love the old time look of Johnny Rockets. It looks like a wonderful place to get a good meal.

  10. Mama Bear,

You went up the stairs to the levee, which is kind of like a cement boardwalk. There we found the aquarium, a bank, a candy store, and to the east, a large mall. There were also vendor's kiosks and shops on the walk way between the aquarium and the mall.

I saw a beautiful church on our way home that I tried to get a photo of, but we were driving and I wasn't successful.

    Blessings,
    Mary

  11. Tammy,

I love the Ohio River. It looks so calm and peaceful, but the current is really strong.

Johnny Rockets is a great place to eat and enjoy some old fashioned atmosphere. When Dwight and I were there three years ago, they did dance to the jukebox, but not this time. I guess the right song didn't come on. However, the boys enjoyed it and so did we.

    Blessings,
    Mary

If you ever get the chance, be sure to eat at a Johnny Rockets. I love the old fashioned atmosphere and wanted the boys to experience it.

  14. Mary,

I sure did enjoy going along on the trip through your post. Your photos are great. I got a big kick out of the "burger joint." It does look as though it's been frozen in time. Great post. Thank you! :-)

  17. Looks like a very enjoyable vacation day! Johnny Rockets is my kind of place!

    Katherine

To answer your question about the double decker bus tea pot - I bought it at Marshall's. I hope to see your bunny tea pot sometime on your blog!

  18. Katherine,

We don't have Marshall's here. It is a beautiful teapot and I'm sure your friend loved it.

I will post a photo of the bunny teapot along with the cream and sugar a little closer to Easter. I know you will love it. They have all kinds of them at every Cracker Barrel we were in and they were very reasonably priced.

It was a lot of fun to eat at Johnny Rockets with the boys. It is a little expensive for burgers, but the atmosphere is wonderful.

    Blessings,
    Mary

  19. Hello dear Mary:-)

I've just caught up with your last few posts and I'm so enjoying hearing about your trip and seeing all those wonderful photos!! I love going to aquariums and I can tell how much the boys enjoyed that one:-)

Aren't those 50's type diners just the greatest? When I go to Barrie, I love going to Wimpy's because of the atmosphere:-) Another place Steve loves bringing me to is Daddy-O's, another 50's style diner with fabulous food.

I'd never heard of the Newport Levee so I'm learning something new here! lol Great pictures of that as well!! xox

  26. I've been across that bridge several times but as I recall it was at night every time so I didn't get to see all the sights. I didn't have a digital camera back then either.

If y'all liked the river there, you should see the Mississippi at Memphis sometime if you've never seen it. The boys would really be impressed!

I like a good cafe or diner. There's nothing like a good burger and fries occasionally.

Have a good Tuesday, Mary. ;o)

    Love and hugs,

    Diane

  27. Mary,

What beautiful pictures of the Newport Leeve, Mary. And I love 50s restaurants as well. We have one not too far away and go there sometimes. But the jukebox is a quarter, not a nickel.

Love reading about your trip, and looking forward to the next segment. Thank you for sharing it with us. Hope you're all rested up now.

    Blessings and Love,

    Renie

  28. Once again, loved it! I have a bridge phobia, always have, so I would be just like your grandson, not wanting to be on it. Bridges are scary.

The burger joint looks awesome. There is one like that in Tucson, and the Hard Rock Cafes are somewhat 'back then'....all very fun to patronize.

Neat old home...I LIKE that very much [instead of tearing it down for progress...utilize the beauty!]
