Friday Show and Tell

It's Show and Tell Friday and today I'd like to show you one of the headvases that I've collected over the years. I call her my southern belle. She is perfect in every way. The beautiful applied roses on her hat and dress set off her outfit. Her face is pleasant with painted eyelashes and a rosy glow to her cheeks. She has a beautiful rosebud mouth.

The inside of the vase is clean and I don't think she has ever been used for flowers. She is one of many headvases that I've collected over the years. The first was one that my grandmother gave me when I had my appendectomy in 1962. I fell in love with headvases and over the years have picked up ones that caught my eye.

Hubby and I have made a decision to get rid of some of the dust collectors in our home. Over 19 years together, we have accumulated way too much stuff. So my southern belle is now for sale in my Ebay store.

There is a time in our lives when we need to clear out the clutter from our homes and this is it for us. I will miss her in a way but whoever purchases her will get many years of enjoyment out of her, just as I have.

Show and Tell Friday is hosted by Kelli at There is No Place Like Home. If you'd like to participate, please follow the link to her site. It's fun and easy.
Michele at Writing the Cyber Highway has tagged me for a meme Procrastination Roadblocks and How to get Around Them. The meme originated at Rebecca Laffar-Smith, at Writer's Round About. Let's see if I can do this.

1. As far as my writing is concerned, there are times when I just do not feel like writing. Yet a deadline is always looming in the distance. Sometimes I get my writing done far ahead of time. At others, I just keep putting it off. For me the deadline is what finally pushes me to push procrastination to one side and get down to business.

2. I have several blogging friends who are a great inspiration to me. When something that I dislike doing needs to be done I visit their websites and read a post or two. The inspiration that I find on these blogs gets me moving and before I know it, the job is done.

3. Quiet time is something that I require in order to function at a normal level. Once I have my quiet time, I can usually tackle anything.

4. Hobbies are a great inspiration. If I am procrastinating, sometimes I will take an hour to do a hobby. Right now I'm making the boys a scrapbook of our vacation. Just an hour of working on the scrapbooks can inspire me to tackle tasks I'd rather not do.

5. Take a few minutes to enjoy a cup of tea. Green tea or a cup of herbal tea is definitely relaxing. After a refreshing cup of tea I seem to have more energy to take on tasks that need to be done.

6. Spend time with the grandsons. The boys can get Grandma moving. When I look at the world through their eyes, it gives me a different and more positive outlook on life. My grandsons are often a source of my inspiration.

7. Read the Bible or pray for someone in need. God's Word is a great way to become inspired and praying for those who are in need inspires me to do the best that I can do.

Now I am to tag some people. Here are my choices:

Mama Bear at Bears in Exile
That is enough tagging. If anyone else would like to do the meme, you are most welcome. If you decide to participate, please leave a comment so I can read your list.

Have a wonderful weekend and be safe on the roads and enjoy time with your family.
~Blessings, Mary~

  1. Mornin' Mary...
I hafta agree with your #3 on your meme. Quiet time is very important to me too.

And your vases? You're getting rid of ALL of them? What a shame. But I DO know just what you mean about 'dust collectors'.

Thanks for the visit dear friend. Hope you and hubby have a super Friday.

  2. Ohhh, I love head vases! I have two, and they aren't old. I have two skirt vases that are old. You shouldn't have any trouble selling yours, I think they are in high demand and get quite expensive. Good luck!

  3. She would make a nice pencil holder, too. I know what you mean about dust collectors. After going through the accumulation of years at my parents' house last January, I swore that I would begin to minimize. I guess I've done some of that. But then I've somehow began a new collection. Anyway, I plan to weed out my plush bear collection. I will only keep the commemorative, Boyd's ones or those given by special people. We've moved quite a bit in the last 15 years so I have gotten rid of some things. Whenever one stays put for 4 years though, things accumulate. While I was doing my room, I got rid of all my past Bible Studies. I didn't know that I had done so many. I have been doing them on Tuesday morning for about 7 years. I hope you are able to sale things for what they're worth. I went to Ebay to see what Hallmark Keepsake ornaments were saling for as I have many. I decided it wasn't worth it to list them. I'll just give them away.

  4. Anni,

I'm not getting rid of all of them. There are a couple that I just wouldn't part with, especially the one that Grandma gave me.

Quiet time is VERY important to me. Noise drives me crazy. LOL

Take care, my friend. It's always nice to visit with you. Be sure to enjoy your weekend.

  5. Katherine,

I'm not sure how old this one is. I believe it's not too old. I've had it for about ten years, but I don't believe it's vintage.

I would love to see your head and skirt vases sometime. Maybe for show and tell?

    Enjoy your weekend.

  6. Mama Bear,

You never know what price you will get on ebay. I've sold some things for far more than their value and others for far less. It depends on the demand. We will see. If I don't get the price I want, I will give her away to someone.

Thanks for dropping by. I always enjoy visiting with you.

    Blessings,

  7. I have begun to give some of my things to my children. I know I should weed out more items, after 49 years of marriage, plus all I have from childhood, you can imagine how much I have. Everytime I think about trying to clear some out I get caught in the nostalgia of "so and so gave me this on such and such for such and such" and I just can't do it!!!!

  8. I don't think I have ever seen a head vase before. How unusual! She's lovely, though. It's a shame you have to get rid of them, but then, I know what you mean about the house getting too cluttered with "stuff."

  9. Susan,

There are some things I am very attached to and will not give up. This is one I purchased myself and so it's easier to sell her, though she is quite beautiful.

I know that after 19 years we have accumulated way too much. So, it's time to clear out a few things.

  10. Hi Mary,

Your southern belle headvase is lovely. I'm sure you'll find someone who would love to add her to their collection.

I'm like you with my writing. Sometimes I just don't feel like it, so I put it off. But when the deadline approaches, I usually finish the job on time. The pressure of the deadline seems to really motivate me.

    Quiet time is always nice.

I enjoyed your procastination roadblocks. I need to apply some of them to myself. And you do have some lovely things in your collections.

Have a blessed weekend. I hope the weather isn't too cold and snowy.

    Blessings,

  11. Barbara,

I am not selling the ones I hold most dear. I will keep a few that were given to me, but some have to go. And I do have a couple of duplicates that were given to me, so one each of those can go.

Headvases like this one were common in floral shops during the late 50s and early 60s. There are also some that are much older. This one, I believe, is a reproduction.

    Thanks for stopping by.
    Blessings,
    Mary

  12. Renie,

I'm glad that my list was useful to you. We writers have to stay motivated and sometimes it's just reading about what others do when we're empty of words.

Thanks for the compliments on my collections. I have collected a variety of things over the years.

It's cold, but we have little snow here. Today is a cold, sunny day. It's nice to see the sun.

  14. Hi Mary, I know what you mean about collections!! When you mention to your kids or grandkids you like(Snowmen or Hens and Roosters) then this is what you are going to get like crazy until you say Ok, Grandma has enough Snowmen!!!! Didn't do any good I am still getting snowmen and ladies!!! I love them all but I have so many I can't put them all out at Christmas time.... So I have learned to be careful what I say I love anymore!! I enjoyed your post today!! Your head vases are adorable! Love and Hugs, Carolyn

  15. Good Afternoon Mary,
Oh my goodness, your Head Vase is just beautiful. It is so hard to part with things like that I know. Years ago when I was little and when I had one of my eye surgerys, someone got me a Head Vase with some flowers in it. I have no idea where it's at now. It may be in my Mother's attic. She was beautiful also. I enjoyed reading your Procrastination Roadblocks. I will do the Meme, but it will probably be one day next week. I will have to do some thinking on it. Is there a certain number of things you have to write down? I know when we moved back in the Summer, DH told me were going to get rid of alot of stuff that we had. Oh my goodness, I didn't want to hear that. LOL. I did get rid of alot of things, but I still have alot as well. I have alot of homemade things from wood that my Parents made me, and I cannot for the life of me part with them. Not right now anyway. Something about homemade gifts are more sentimental than store bought things. I know when DH told me we was going to have to down size, I joked around with him and told him, well guess we will have to get rid of your guitars. Oh my goodness, if looks could kill, I would be a dead duck. LOL. So now, when he knows I don't want to get rid of something, he will just bite his tongue and go on. LOL. Take care my friend and have a great day. May God Bless You and Yours.

    Love & Hugs,
    Karen H.

  16. Julieann,

These were quite popular in the late 50s and early 60s. They were used by floral shops to send arrangements in. I received my first from my Grandma in 1963. I still have her and she will remain with me.

Thanks so much for dropping by.

  18. Karen,

I think you stopped DH in his tracks when you told him to get rid of one of his guitars. LOL At least now he bites his tongue.

Take your time doing the meme. I had to think about it too. We are to tell 7 ways we fight the roadblocks. It will be interesting to see what others write.

Take care, my friend and see if you can find that headvase. I would love to see a photo of it.

  19. I need to do some sorting, decluttering and tossing myself, and soon. I sure do dread it, though. So I guess I'm procrastinating about that, LOL! ;o)

  20. I did not even know there was such a thing as head vases. Cute idea.
I had to get rid of a lot of my dust collectors just before we move. I think others will go when we get into our own home and I unpack.
But..... she is cute. Julia would love bringing in small flowers to put in her hat.

When it comes to getting rid of vintage treasures I'm also a procrastinator. I really hate getting rid of stuff but the time has come.

In fact, tonight I'm freezing. It's not that cold, but very damp here.

Take care and have a safe and relaxing weekend.

I'm glad you got to see her. If she doesn't sell, I will give her to someone. I need to make some room around here. My china cabinet is full, my shelves and entertainment center is full and my closets are full. Time to let some material things go.

Thanks for dropping by. Enjoy your weekend.

  25. I don't think I've ever seen a "head vase" before (or if I did see one, I don't know that I realized what it was) ... but this one is lovely. I can "relate" to wanting to clear things out ... I've been working on that one myself for a few years now and there's no end in sight. I found your procrastination list interesting. I've not thought of that topic before. I used to have my students create "stuckness" lists as ways to get around "blocks" ...

Just two more matches left in the Australian Open and life should return to normal ... for a while at least.
