Thankful Thursday and Wolves in our Area

Today is Thankful Thursday. It is a day when we list the things we are thankful for. If you would like to participate, be sure to stop by Sting My Heart and pay Iris a visit. You can find all the information there.

I am thankful for many things in my life. Here are a few things I am especially thankful for this week.

* Having a roof over my head, food on the table and warmth in the house during the cold, wet spell we are going through at present. Some are not as fortunate.

* For the weather being nice enough on Tuesday that I was able to get out and get some things done in the yard that needed to be done.

* Having a wonderful mother who brought me forget-me-nots, bleeding heart and lily-of-the-valley from her garden. Mine were lost when the contractor did some work for us. I'm so glad to have these beautys back in my yard.

* For having access to free medical care and for my cancer checkup this morning. It's marvelous that I can be checked annually to be sure I remain cancer free. Please pray that the results will continue to be negative as they've been now for 14 years.

It's surprising how much wildlife can be in an area and the people living there have no idea that it exists. We go about our busy lives never knowing what animals live nearby. Yes, we see birds, squirrels and raccoons, but did you ever think about the wildlife that exists in your area that you don't see?

My husband is on the road all night, every night. This spring he has seen large groups of deer in urban centers across southern Ontario. On Monday night he saw something that many of us will never witness. As he took the ramp to gain entrance to the 403 highway, he saw that a deer had been hit and killed. That in itself is unusual, as the police usually have the carcasses taken away immediately. What was very unique about the experience is that a large wolf was feeding off the kill. From his description of a wolf that was larger than our Alaskan malamute, Meeko and with about the same coloring lets me know that what he saw was a Timber Wolf.

A timber wolf is also known as a gray wolf. These animals usually mate for life. They can weigh up to 175 lbs and be as long as 6 feet from the tip of the nose to the tip of the tail. Not something you would want to meet up with unsuspectingly. They vary in color from white, to pale gray, to black and some are multiple colors. They have between 4 to six cubs born in the spring of the year after a 63 day gestation period. They are pack animals and packs can range from as little as two wolves to as many as 30. An average pack is usually about 4 to 6 animals. An alpha male and female are the leaders of the pack.

Hubby knows that he was witness to a very rare sight when he saw the wolf feeding off the deer kill. I wish I had been there to see it. I have only seen a wolf in it's natural habitat once in my entire life and it was running down the side of the road. A spectacular sight and one I will never forget.

Take time to contemplate what animals might live behind the scenes in your region. I would love to hear about them and also about your sightings of anything unusual.
Have a wonderful Thursday. ~Blessings, Mary~

  12. Well, I didn't see it myself but my neighbor told me a lost deer ended up in the parking lot of a local grocery store this past weekend. Needless to say, there were a few damaged vehicles that day. The deer managed to regain her bearings apparently but she was beyond frightened.

  13. I think about deer when I drive at night and hope I never have one go in front of my vehicle. I have never seen a wolf in the wild. I often let our dog walk without a leash on trails if no one is about. He obeys very well when I call, but I hope we never meet a coyote or wolf. we have really reduced the habitat of these wild animals.

  14. I am so glad that you have got your flowers back...I lost a huge day lily last year due to the county putting in a new water meter..I was so sad... it was about 48" across...... they came during a day that I was not here and began to dig....... booooo hooooo........... We also have a lot of wildlife here... We see deer all the time in our back field and we put out salt block for them..... We also have a redident bob cat...... some days he just take a lazy stroll across our back yard... My schnauzer think he wants a piece of him but that old bob cat just looks at Zeke and grins.....(I am sure he does) I would love to see one of those timber wolves! What a magnificent animal....

You have a day of watching the wildlife....... Enjoy Gods creatures.....

  15. Hi Mary,
Thanks for stopping by my blog.
I'm so glad to meet you.
I have another sweet blogging friend, Sita, who lives in Canada.
That's great news that you've remained cancer free for 14 years.
I will keep you in my prayers.
We live in town but have some animal stories. They aren't that exciting, but we had a whole little family of skunks that were living under our house and we didn't even know it until we remodled our bathroom and my husband had to crawl under the house. It's a long, but very interesting story. I'll have to share it as a post one of these days.
I pray you have a great day & thanks again for commenting on my blog.
I just added another post that's a prayer request. Since you've dealt more closely with cancer, I know you will be in prayer for this little one.
    God bless,
    Love,
    Valerie

  16. A beautiful post. Honey Bear and I often see Deer. When we lived in Pennsylvania, roadkill was very prevalent.
As man encroaches more and more on their natural habitat, animals have to learn to adapt or die off. Its sad really. I love seeing the Deer but it makes me nervous when we're driving through an area where thy might run across the road and cause a wreck.
How lucky you are to have free medical care. That is one of our cheif concerns about retirement.
Have a great weekend if I don't get back to visit. we're leaving in the morning.

  17. Hi Mary...

Living in the foothills when we were in Colorado all those years we saw many wolves, foxes, deer, moose and many more things. I especially loved the fact that one year we got to see an eagle, nesting...and we saw the fledglings grow too. All from a distance with binoculars but it was still 'in our own backyard'. Then, in Arizona, we had a covey of quail that would nest under our walking bridge in our own backyard! Not to mention out walking in the desert with coyotes following me. Oh and a few rattlesnakes...that would always make me WANNA MOVE!!!! As in move OUT of Arizona. LOL Nature is wonderful.

Your Thursday greeting for us makes us all stop and say "Thank you for letting us have a roof, food, and clothing". You did good!

Oh, and PS...my mother LOVED lily of the valley.

    Happy Thursday.

  18. PS.......I didn't realize you're a cancer survivor!!! Way to go!!! Keep it up.

  19. Mary,

Wow! What an awesome sighting. We haven't had wolves or mountain lions in New Hampshire for many years. We have coyotes, foxes, and bobcats. We had a fox in our yard last summer and there have been nights when I was out stargazing and heard the coyotes. But I've never seen a coyote or a bobcat. As you know, I've seen a bear on a few occasions -- right in my own yard. He lets us live in his territory! LOL

I enjoyed learning about the timber wolf and I enjoyed your Thankful Thursday. Your Mom is a peach! You are in my thoughts and prayers for continued cancer-free checkups forever.

    Love & hugs,
    Tina

  20. Hello dear Mary:-)

Such a wonderful list of things to be thankful for...prayers that you continue to be cancer free!!

I've seen many deer, moose, bears, fox, etc that have been hit by cars but except for seeing birds feed off the carcasses, I've never seen any other animal eating off it. That certainly must have been very exciting for your hubby to see a wolf eating the carcass!!! You must tell him to be like a blogger and carry his camera with him wherever he goes so that he can take pictures when things like that happen! lol

We've had a groundhog hanging around our shed the last few days...only once before have we seen one. We often see fox and raccoons in our yard and the occasional bear. As you say, you never know what is out there in the dark!!!

I want to thank you dear Mary for your love and concern on my post yesterday...we'll have so much to talk about in our next phone call won't we! LOL xoxo

  22. You have a very Thankful Heart! When we go to see my son who lives 60 miles South East of me, we have seen deer, fox, wild turkeys, and all kinds of birds!!
Maybe the most interesting thing we saw was the stealth bomber going back to the base and a horse and buggy comming down the road at the same time! There is a large Mennonite community living close by him!! I don't think I will ever forget that site!! Love and hugs Grams

  23. Pretty neat sighting.
We don't have pictures but we have some interesting wildlife on our farm in Franklinton. We have a wild hog that is massive and a bobcat. I am not interested in running in to either so hopefully they keep their distance. The bad thing is that both run off the deer. We see lots of these and there are a few in our freezer. ;)

  25. Wow, it has been many years since I have seen a wolf running free. I was in high school and visiting my relatives here in Saskatchewan. We were walking through some trees on the edge of the pasture on my uncles farm, I looked up and saw what I thought was a large dog loping along beside us. I pointed the creature out to my cousins boyfriend who got quite excited and made us move to the center of the pasture away from the trees. It wasn't until we were in the truck driving away that they told me what I saw. It was the most beautiful creature I had seen in quite some time city girl that I was.

Here we mostly see pheasant, grouse, deer, foxes, skunks, and the occasional moose.

    God bless.

  28. Mary,

Have faith, your tests will come back fine...

I've never seen a wolf in the wild. As for deer, I see them all of the time. They are such beautiful creatures. I know nature - but natural feeding is not something I want to see...

I do know that deer are very quick and will dart right out in front of a vehicle before the driver even knows whats happening - or else they will freeze - stand there and get hit.

I hope that whomever hit the deer didn't get hurt. My former brother-in-law hit a deer once and it completely destroyed his front end and broke his windshield.

You have one up me. I have never seen a wolf in the wild much less seeing it feed on a deer. We have a little red fox and the packs of coyotes running amuck on the farm. The foxes den is close to the our houses and I think it is for protection. This morning behind Puppy's truck were male turkeys strutting. I think they are happy hunting season has closed and are having a party in the yard. The deer will be dropping babies soon and we will see those spotted cuties when the Mothers bring them up to show them off. No wolves here. Peace

  30. You know, sometimes we take the daily things, like food, a roof over our head for granted (well, I do). Thank you for the reminder that we should not take everything in our lives for granted.
It is so great to read that you have been cancer-free for 14 years - PTL!
I am glad that your husband made it safely home after what he had witnessed.

Thank you so much for sharing your grateful heart with us.

    Be blessed today and always.
