Green Thumb Sunday

It's Green Thumb Sunday, hosted by Tricia at As the Garden Grows. If you'd like to participate, just click on the link to find out how.

It seems like time is flying by and that summer just started. Now, it is autumn and soon all of the trees will be alive with color. It's been really cool here at night and it seems like there is a hint of frost in the late evening air.

In autumn, I like to dress my porch up with lovely flowers. Autumn mums are often the flower of choice, as they will withstand some hard frosts before dying back.

I had to go to Home De*pot on Friday to buy more paint for the apartment. I have been watching the fall mums there for sometime. First they were selling for $20 and a couple of weeks ago they had come down to $12.99. Hubby asked me if I wanted one and I said, "Not yet." I just knew they were going to drop in price again.

Saturday when I arrived, the mums were priced at $8.99, so I bought one. Here it is in all of its glory.

It looks great sitting on the porch railing and brings a splash of color to the yard. I only bought this one and am now kicking myself. I should have bought another one for the other side of the porch railing. A rust one might look nice, or even a white one or another yellow one. Mmm! I shall see. I do have to go back to Home De*pot, so maybe I will pick up an additional one.

In other garden news, many of my plants died back early because of the record rainfall we had in July and August. The ivy that Brandon planted got black mould and I continue to remove leaves that are mouldy. It may last for the duration of the year. At one time I thought I would lose it, but it is still doing well.

Take care and enjoy the beauty, sights, sounds and fragrances of autumn. It is a wonderful time of year. ~Blessings, Mary~

  5. If it were me...I'd by an identical yellow for the other side. LOL It's too hot here for mums yet -when hurricane season ends, maybe it'll be cool enough for us here [Ike looks like it may head for the Texas coast...:::sigh:::. But I DO love them. And it looks great on your porch railing with the birds. A great photo.

Happy Sunday wishes to you Mary.

The mum looks pretty along side the bluebird. LOL as I do the same thing with plants, I watch for a better price. Last year I got two beautiful red crytle myrtles. Thank you so much for the awards and your friendship meets A LOT to me also. I will display this with the love with which you gave them. Peace

  9. Sorry I’ve not been by more regularly. I’m struggling to keep up with life in general at the moment but I’ve been catching up with your recent posts in my reader this morning. Taryn’s a little QT and I’m sure he’s a delight! You’re lucky to still have your mom in your life. I enjoyed the ‘Shack Outback’ poem you shared a while back and all the photos. Meeko seems like a happy dog indeed. Congratulations on your upcoming Blogoversary! I had no idea you were so new to blogging when we ‘met’ last Fall. My Blogoversary is 45 days away … so you’d just been out there about a month and a half before me. YOU, my friend, must have been a QUICK STUDY because you sure learned things faster than I did ;--)
    Hugs and blessings,

  10. Autumn is my favorite time of year. It's like the kick-off of the holiday season for me. I eagerly await the first cool days and the first nip of the cold nights. So far, it's still highs in the 90's here in Texas, but I've already asked my husband to get the fall decorations down from the attic. I'm ready to enjoy the colors of autumn and the feeling of the seasons changing (even if my local weather is refusing to cooperate just yet. lol).

  11. Autumn is my favorite time of year. I think I will go out and buy some mums this week. Every year that I plant them, they never seem to do that well. I keep trying them in the same part of the yard and I guess I should try a different spot.

  12. That is a great buy! I usually buy a Creeping Charlie/Wandering Jew hanging basket for $12.99 every year, and it grows until it touches the ground. Provides instant color for 8 months out of the year. I'm sure your mum plant will pay you back with its beauty.

  13. I can't wait for the leaves to start changing.
I have felt the cool in the air too. I love it! Several mornings this week it has been in the low 50's.
I can't wait to see the seasons change this year.

  15. I love potted fall mums and always end up planting them in my border where they come up year after year. I will likely get more this year at the market. Fall really is here.

  16. Mary, I noticed the mums on sale at Home Depot too. I am now kicking myself for not buying one to use on my front stoop. Yours is absolutely beautiful.

I have my new computer, but lost all my email. Hotmail had decided I do not exist anymore. Hopefully the new one I arranged works or I could be in big trouble.

    God bless.

  17. Love your mum. I haven't bought any plants or flowers this year. I've just enjoyed the ones that come back. Saved some money, but haven't had the color I usually have. Your porch rail looks pretty!

  18. Like you, I love to get Mums for this time of year and last year I had waited until the price on them went down as well:-) This coming week I'm going to go see what's available...last year I had gotten a huge basket of the rust coloured ones. I love the basket of yellow ones you got and the price certainly was right:-)

It was a cold rainy day here today and it sure did feel like a Fall day! My flowers are starting to look worse for wear but my faerie garden flowers are still doing amazingly well. I think it's because they're protected by the big pine tree the garden is planted underneath of. xoxo

  19. Those flowers are beautiful, Mary!! I'm sorry you lost so many flowers to the rain. I hope Brandon's plant makes it. My poor petunias were very sad. Usually the bloom profusely, but like you we had a long rainy spell. Maybe next year!! :-)
    hugs,
    Tina
