History Made in Space by Canadian Astronauts and Memory of the Moon Landing

Julie Payette, a Canadian astronaut, was aboard the Space shuttle Endeavor last Wednesday when it made a successful launch from Cape Canaveral at 6:03 pm. Endeavor successfully hooked up to the space station on Friday. There are 13 astronauts on the space station...the largest ever gathering in space and the first time that two Canadian astronauts have been in space at the same time. Payette was greeted by fellow Canadian astronaut Robert Thirsk and history was made.

Besides being the biggest space gathering ever, it was the most diverse: seven Americans, two Russians, two Canadians, one Japanese and one Belgian. Twelve men, one woman. Four medical doctors. And engineers and pilots galore.

Endeavors successful arrival at the space station was marred when astronauts were informed that there may be damage to a fuel tank. They also had to move to a higher orbit to avoid space ojunk.

Monday is the 40th anniversary of man landing on the moon. I remember well watching Neil Armstrong as he stepped onto the Moon's surface, in the Sea of Tranquility, at 0256 GMT, nearly 20 minutes after first opening the hatch on the Eagle landing craft.

Armstrong had earlier reported the lunar module's safe landing at 2017 GMT with the words: "Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed."

As he put his left foot down first Armstrong declared: "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." Michelle, who was only 5 months old at the time sat on my knee. It's something I will never forget.

Do you remember the moon landing or where you too young? If so, what historic event do you remember?

I hope all my friends and readers have a great week. We are enjoying the cooler temperatures of this summer.

  1. I do remember the moon landing. I was 8 years old at the time and we didn't have a tv so we went to my uncles house to watch it. It didn't seem like as big a deal to me as it did to my parents. I didn't get the enormity of it at the time.

  2. It was a spine tingling, thrilling moment in my life. I was 23 and married without children at the time. But I wanted children and the moon landing somehow gave me a sense of a world with hope.

  4. I remember it but not what I was doing or where I was. I would have been 20 years old and had a 1 year old at that time.

We have a NASA channel here because of being so near the Space Center. It is interesting to watch some of the footage they shoot.

  5. Yep, yep, yep.....we both posted a bit on the moon landing. That space 'forum' this past week is great to hear about. It's amazing and boggles the mind what accomplishments men can do these days. I oftentimes think of DaVinci...wondering what he would think if he were alive....what with his first depiction and thoughts of planes that he etched.

    Have a grand day Mary.

  7. It certainly has been an exciting week, having two Canadians up in space right now:-) As for the first moon landing, I was 11 years old at the time and really don't remember if I watched it on tv or not!! I was probably too busy playing outside or something! lol

We're finally having a beautiful day here, sunny and supposed to go up to 23c. I was able to hang out my laundry on the clothesline for the first time in 2 weeks! Long range forecast, though, is back to rain for Wed, Thurs, Friday and Sat. Ask me if I'm impressed! lol

Hope your day is a great one my friend. xoxo

  10. Another great post. When I was young I always wanted the guys in space to "Beam me up." Just like on Star Track.
I do remember the event and was thorough amazed that someone was on the moom walking around.
We watch for the space station and pull the info off of the sighting in our area and I hope we have one while the Endeaver is attached as it makes it so much brighter in the sky.
    Peace
