Fun Monday

I'm a little late posting Fun Monday today as other things kept me busy most of the morning. This week our hostess is Irish Coffeehouse and this is the assignment she has given us:

THEN: As a child day dreaming of what your future would hold for you, what did you want to be when you grew up? Did you ever pursue or achieve it?

NOW: If you could be trained and placed in any career beginning tomorrow, what would it be?

As children my brother and I used to explore our Grandpa's farm. At one time, Native peoples called this place home. We would follow the plow and pick up arrowheads and pieces of pottery that were turned up. We also explored the back section of Grandpa's farm and found pottery, pipes, arrowheads and other paraphernalia, such as spear heads and bone tools. This gave me a burning desire to be an archeologist.

When I was 15, my Dad had a work related accident and was in the hospital for 7 months. My brother and I put our career dreams on hold to go to work and help Mom provide for the family. My dream was forgotten.

Since my archeology dream wasn't realized, when I was in my early thirties, I decided to go to Winnipeg and become a member of the RCMP. (Royal Canadian Mounted Police.) I was to leave in early September and my daughter was to stay with Mom & Dad. There would be three months training before I was given a post, probably as a border guard. On August 26th Dad passed away suddenly. I gave up the idea to stay home and close to Mom. I have never regretted that decision.

If I were to be trained and placed in any career of my choosing today, I would chose archeology. I still love digging in the dirt to find treasures from the past. I have found bottles, dishes, household items and more. As I gaze upon the items that I find, I wonder about the lives of the people that they belonged to. If only these items could talk. What a wonderful story they'd have to tell. ~Blessings, Mary~

  1. Ohhhhhhhhhhhh, how nice would that all be. As a child, as a teen, as a grown up! Wouldn't that be fun to be an archeologist? I remember once we went out arrowhead hunting in the prairies of Colorado. I was having a hey day out there, picking up chards of flint in hopes of finding a whole on...'til I came up to a butte, and the place was crawling with rattlesnakes. I left, and never went back. But there is a place in Arizona in the desert that I loved to go walking around in and finding pottery pieces. I'm not sure if I have any of them any more. And one time I as scrounging around and found an Apache Tear. I should blog about that, huh?

Yes!!!! Let's go together with our burshes and our pith helmets and go digging. We'd have fun too, after our day's dig...at the local pub. [kidding]

Great Fun Monday. Did you go over to her site and sign Mr. Linky?

  3. You are a wonderful daughter and I'm glad you don't regret those decisions. I always thought being an archaeologist would be wonderful too. Our family loves history and finding those little pieces of it would be great!

  5. I have to say I've never aspired to do anything that involved being outside, hot, and/or dirty. But it sounds like something you'd love.

I wanted to be a teacher, mom, and secretary and have been all 3 at one time or another.

  6. It's sad that life circumstances didn't allow you to fullfil your dream. But see once you are retired you can do this as a hobby. I do now everything I like and never had time for it.

  7. How fun to learn more about you from these three questions! I lost several hours yesterday when Blogger wouldn’t allow me to sign in … and today with my class this morning & errands this afternoon. Hopefully I’ll have time to catch up with blog visits tomorrow.
    Hugs and blessings,

  8. Mary,

I didn't know you wanted to be an archeologist or to join the RMCP! I can well imagine you in either profession. You've had a lot of varied interests - always curious about the world, always exploring in one way or another. It's no wonder that you are such a good writer!! You keep your imagination in good shape!

    I enjoyed your post. :-)

    Hugs,
    Tina
