The Garden in November

Although the weather has been a little cooler than last week, it's still gorgeous for November. Last year at this time we had about 3 inches of snow. At the beginning of this week we were going out in our shirt sleeves or a light jacket.

I'm amazed the garden still has blooms in it. Each time I step out onto the side porch, this beautiful sunny colored mum catches my eye. It is gorgeous and this is one that I was going to dispose of because the leaves turned brown and I thought it was dying. I nutured it and this is the result.

If you click to enlarge, you can see there is still a bit of lavendar blooming. That is amazing at this time of year.
And Brandon certainly made a good choice when he chose the aspargus fern for the window boxes. They are still doing really well, though they have been touched by frost. It's really nice to still have color around the yard this late in November.

Some of you have been inquiring of Dakota. He was ill last Sunday and continued to be ill until Monday night when he began passing some blood in his stool. I figured it was from strain, but took him to the vet just to be on the safe side. She administered an anti-inflammatory by injection and gave us a prescription for some pills. By Tuesday night he was acting more like himself and now seems to be back to normal. He still has antibiotics to finish but it looks like he's going to be fine. At first the vet thought it might be Parvo, which is very dangerous to dogs. I didn't think it was because he has had his innoculations. Maybe he just had the dog flu.

Other than that there isn't much news in this neck of the woods.

  1. I love the new header! Anni does such great work. Your flowers are surprising. Who would think you would have them yet in November?

  4. I'm finding your post hard to read... I highlighted it to see it... maybe you should cange a setting for the text?? Or I can just keep highlighting the posts.. LOL The photo of your garden was good. My impatiens are still standing and growing. Haven't brought in any of the house plants yet. I'm happy to have this warm weather just as long as I can have it..

  5. Mary, Mary!!! That yellow mum in late season that it is is just GORGEOUS!!!

Oh I never thought of Parvo....yes, it could've been. But then, the vets don't know the pet in any family like the owner does...so, you were right in your assumption. Glad to hear he's better!!! That's scary.

As for weather...remember the drought we had all summer. Well, yesterday we received over 5 inches of rain. And then, it rained more last night. I heard on the 10 PM news that Rockport, Texas...just about 35 miles from Corpus received over NINE inches or rainfall in one day.

  6. I remember in Sarnia once putting the garden to bed in December. We're done long before now in the capital region.

  7. Parvo is the worse thing you can hear with a sick pet. So glad Dakota didn't have it. I'm surprised the Vet suggested it since it is more common in puppies and not common at all dogs who have had their shots.

You are so fortunate to still have some color around you. Our trees are almost totally naked and green grass is a rarity.

  8. No flowers in bloom here in central PA -or at least none that I have observed.
Boy -what a scare that must have been for you with Dakota though! Just glad that things are on the mend for him -and for you as a result of that vet's visit! I can't imagine what you would do if something were to happen to him.

  9. So glad Dakota is doing better. You know there was a case here in Oregon of someone's pet cat getting the swine flu from one of the kids. Maybe Dakota did. Poor guy!

  10. Anni does such lovely things for your headers!

We keep having up and down weather, but there are no flowers left to be seen around here.

I was going to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving, but I remembered that you already celebrated!

  11. It certainly has been a very unusual November so far, even in my neck of the woods. I was looking at my faerie garden the other day and flowers that I had cut right down are starting to grow again!!! As you said, we usually have a few inches of snow by now but not this year. I want to make one more trip to Niagara Falls before Christmas so keeping my fingers crossed that we won't get any snow for another couple of weeks yet! lol

So good to hear that Dakota is feeling much better again, long may it continue!!

I so love your Christmas decor in here, as usual Anni did a beautiful job:-) xoxo
