Update on Things Happening

Just thought I'd give you an update on things happening in my life. I went to the doctor this morning for a checkup on my diabetes. It's continuing to be about the same. I would guess my average glucose level is about 9.0, which isn't what I'd like it to be but a lot better than the 14s and 16s that I had in December. Blood glucose levels are monitored differently here than in the US. Blood sugars should be between 4.0 and 7.0. Anything over 7.0 is considered to be diabetes.

The doctor isn't going to up my insulin dosage until after I have my A1C at the end of March. That will give him an average for three months. He will make a decision then. I have an appointment with a diabetes educator on March 16th. At that time we will make a meal plan.

Other good news is that since December 15th, I have lost 7 lbs. Now that's not a lot, but better to take it off slowly so it will remain off. I have added a weight loss counter to my blog and my weight loss goal for 2010 is 62 lbs. At the current rate of approximately 1 lb per week, I will come close to my goal if I'm careful. I will be happy if I lose anywhere between 40 and 55 lbs. I'm keeping my expectations low so if I do meet the goal of 62 lbs, I will be ecstatic. Both myself and the doctor think a lot of my glucose level problems is from excessive weight gain, some of it due to water retention. I've been taking a diuretic for some time now and it seems to be helping.

I've had the sniffles of late and so haven't gone to see my friend, Jo Ann, who had surgery in December. She was to the doctor last week and he drained her cheek, which was badly swollen and put in a draining tube. I can tell by her voice on the phone that she is doing much better. She will find out the 25th of this month when her radiation therapy will begin.

Some people have been asking about Dakota. He is doing well. He enjoyed playing in the snow last week. It's almost all gone now. There is a female dog that comes to the park across the street and Dwight has been letting him off his leash to play with her in the morning. It is good exercise for him.

He will always be a hyper dog...a far cry from the tiny puppy that came into our house last February. He is a medium sized dog and I doubt he will grow much more but he will thicken up as he matures.

As for my projects, they've come to a bit of a standstill because of problems getting a sealer that will work properly. However, I haven't given up and will keep you updated.

We actually saw the sun today. It was nice to experience a day that wasn't overcast and dreary. Hopefully this trend will continue for the rest of the week.

  4. 7 pounds since Dec 15, I would go paki-paki aka as clap clap, that is a great job especially during Christmas holidays.

Is there anything to take to keep sugar level down?

Happy belated New Year greetings. Been and still on holidays in Australia. Not been blogging as much

  8. Congratulations on your weight loss! My sister has diabetes, too, and when she loses weight, she doesn't have to take medicine for it. I'm trying to lose weight, also. I don't need to lose much, only around 10 lbs or so, but it is still hard to accomplish when you love to snack on sweets.

  10. Good luck with the weight loss goal!! It's one of the most difficult things for me. I love to eat too much...and all the time.

Thanks for updating on Dakota. I've been curious about him since you haven't share any recent photos lately.

Take care, and get rid of those sniffles.

  11. What a beautiful background and header.... I have a jacket that my mother got for me quite a few years ago with a similar design in it and the exact same colors. I have taken really good care of it so as not to wear it out. I am especially glad that I did now that Mom is gone.It feels like she is hugging me when I wear it now.

I know what a struggle it is to try to get the diabetes under control and keep it there. I also know how hard it is to loose weight when you are a diabetic, because many of the drugs we have to take contributes to the weight gain. I applaud you dear Mary for what you have accomplished so far. I know you will meet your goal.

  13. Glad to hear your diabetes is under control and you're losing weight. My sugar is well controlled but my weight is another matter altogether. I've not gained any, but I haven't lost much either. :-/

It's another stormy day here. We're under a tornado watch but so far there's no bad storms near us yet. It's gloomy here too, but unseasonably warm and muggy. I'd much rather deal with cold and snow as storms, especially in January!

Good luck getting the right sealer for your project. I'm looking forward to seeing it.

    Love and hugs,

    Diane

Sounds like we are fighting the same battle but you appear to be doing a better job than I. I am walking up to 20 mins each morning and my goal is to walk twice a day 20 mins and hopefully that will make some of my tonage disappear. Good luck and Peace

  16. Hello dear Mary:-)

I'm so sorry to have missed your call today, I was gone out to spend the day with mom and by the time I got back, it was time to start on supper. I will try calling you tomorrow after lunch if that's a good time for you?

Good for you for having lost 7 lbs, that's awesome! I really need to find my willpower and stop snacking at night, that's my biggest problem. I know you will feel so much better and no doubt your blood sugar will also settle down. At least you're doing it the right way..slowly!!

My prayers continue for Jo Ann, hopefully her radiation treatments will go well for her. Such a shame you haven't been able to visit her because of having the sniffles but she certainly doesn't need to get sick right now with a cold so I don't blame you for staying away.

We've had sunshine two days in a row but then it's also gotten colder so we can't win! lol We still have snow but nothing like we usually do at this time of year.

Glad to hear that Dakota is doing well and enjoying some female company in the mornings:-)

Take good care of you and we'll talk soon! xoxo

  18. Congratulations on the weight loss. I lost a fair bit about six years ago but most (not quite all) has crept back on. That's the way of it, it seems.
