Green Thumb Sunday

Green Thumb Sunday

My photo this week for Green Thumb Sunday is a photo of the lavender that grows in my side flower garden. My oldest grandson, Brandon, who has the green thumb in the family, planted it about four years ago. It did well the first year and the second year it tried taking over my garden. The next spring I pulled most of it out and by fall, it had spread to take over the entire end of the flower bed. It continues to grow there and every spring I cut it back and remove more than half of it.

Each year it spreads to take over that end of the garden. Each fall I gather the lavender and dry it. I place it around my house and in my drawers to keep the house smelling nice. It is a lovely plant and one that I cherish. My grandson was only eight when he planted it. He's always had a green thumb since he was old enough to help in the garden. He seems to have a natural ability for making things grow.

  2. I love lavender but haven't had much luck growing it. I can grow just about anything else, though! I haven't done any gardening in several years because of my arthritis, but I still have the urge, especially in the Spring.

Have a blessed Sunday, Mary. :o)

    Love and hugs,

  4. Cynthia,

Yes, Brandon has a green thumb for sure. He can grow almost anything. He also got morning glories to grow in the side bed and that was something I could never get to grow there.

  5. Diane,

I need to bring Brandon over to your house. He'd love to grow lavender for you and he'd have your flower beds looking great in no time. :-) He loves gardening and does very well with it.

Thanks for visiting. It's always nice to see you here.

  6. Lavendar is lovely. I've grown it before, but a different variety suited to my climate zone. I like the scent, but am not as crazy about it as some folks.
My grandson always had a love for carniverous plants when he was young. He memorized the names of about 24 varieties before he was six. It was an obsession with him. I finally bought him a Venus Fly Trap, and he kept it going for years. I hope some day he again becomes interested in gardening.

  8. I have four lavenders (Italian?) and some ruffle lavenders. They are so pretty and the nicest thing is harvesting the flowers and having them until the next flowering season. The best thing I ever did : ).
Such a lovely story about your son.

  11. I remember my gran always smelling of lavender, she had the perfume and talc powder:-) I've never tried growing my own, not sure how well it would do here in the north but I sure love the smell of it. Your grandson is a future famous gardener in the making for sure:-) xoxo

  12. blueblue,

Thanks for dropping by. I'm glad you enjoy your lavender plant. Mine is exquisite and would takeover the entire flower bed if I let it. Each year there is lots of lavender there for anyone that wants it and I often give some away when I gather and dry it in the fall.

Thanks for dropping by. I wish you a wonderful Sunday.

  14. Pea,

I think the lavender would grow where you are. Your climate isn't much different than mine. Brandon started this one from a small plant. He loves lavender. Be sure to check at your local plant nursery in the spring. I'm sure it would do just fine where you are.

Have a great day and a wonderful week.

    Mary

Yes, it is a beautiful plant. I agree that it is just as nice when it has finished flowering. The fragrance of dried lavender is also nice for keeping things fresh.

  19. Susie,

Lavender is a lovely plant. I'm glad you get to enjoy it growing in your garden.

My grandma is the one who taught me a love of gardening and I have passed it down to both my grandsons, though the younger one isn't as interested. Could be the age.

Thanks for the nice comment on the button I made for Pea. I did think it suited her perfectly and was so glad she liked it.

Thanks for stopping by. I always enjoy your visits.

  20. it's so sweet that you have such a lovely reminder of your grandson's handiwork. I love the smell of lavender, perhaps I will try my hand at planting some in spring ;)

    Happy GTS!

  21. Ann,

Lavender isn't hard to grow. Brandon just put it in the ground and it thrived. That bed has no special soil and it only gets fertilized once or twice a year. Give it a try and then be sure to let us know how it does.

    Have a great day.
