A Bit About My Writing

Since Show and Tell Friday is on hiatus because of the Thanksgiving holiday, I am going to tell you a bit about my writing and my favorite places on the Web that I visit when I'm not blogging.

I write web content, poetry and stories. If you would like to read a couple of my childhood memories stories, please visit my Treasures To Me blog. I enjoy writing these kind of stories. They are my favorite things to write about and I have had many of them published in anthologies, such as Chocolate for Women and Guideposts.

If you decide to visit the Chocolate for Women website, be sure to check out the Story Excerpts to read a sampling of what the Chocolate for Women series was all about. Kay Allenbaugh compiled this series and did a marvelous job. You can see my bio there under Contributors.

I sold many of my family stories to Guideposts and they appeared in the series, Listening to the Animals and Comfort from Beyond. The books are full of great inspirational stories that will make your spirits soar. Guideposts is a great source of inspirational reading material. I have also had stories published in Angels on Earth Magazine.

Ideal contacted me one day by email and asked if they could publish a blurb from one of my stories in The Blessings of a Grandfather's Love. I was delighted. It's not often that a publisher contacts a writer to ask to use their writing.
After 911, I was very honored to have a story published in 911: The Day America Cried. This is a Collection of Poems, Letters and Stories of an American Tragedy, as stated on the book's cover. It was compiled by Victoria Walker and published by Obediah Press. All proceeds from this book were donated to the Todd M. Beamer Foundation.

Articles that I've had published online are many. I have written for Life in Italy, At the Fence, Windowbox, Suite101, as well as many others. My favorite is eCountryLifestyle. I am going to write a review on this website soon. If you enjoy a country lifestyle, this website is one that you will enjoy visiting. There is so much to do there.

I hope you will pick up some of the print publications that I have written for. They are all inspirational and you will enjoy reading the stories that are included in these anthologies. Until my next post, be safe. ~Mary~

Yes, I have had a lot of success and so will you. Keep on writing and sending your stories and articles to print publications and websites. You're very talented.

The larger your writing network, the more markets you will find. Helping each other is the way to go.

I'm so glad you're back. I would have missed you if you'd have been gone until Saturday. I am at present writing ten articles that have a VERY short deadline, but just had to check to see who had dropped in.

  12. I did not know that about you. Actually, I am going to recommend one of your recommendations to a friend of mine. I'll have to keep my eye on the Guideposts and look to see what you'll publish in their next. I'm excited for you Mary, and just for you I am going to add (eh?)

If you read the Listing to the Animals series or Comfort from Beyond, you have probably read me and Renie from Renie Burghardt's World. She also had many stories in these books.

Guideposts has wonderful reading material. I enjoy all of their publications.

  15. I admire and envy those who are inspired and disciplined enough to write stories and essays. To then have them published is a wonderful affirmation of their creativity and talent. I will most definitely visit your blog to enjoy your work.

  16. My hubby keeps telling me I have a novel inside me but I'm just too lazy to write it! My limit is 55 Flash Fiction - I can just about manage 55 words!

Thanks for taking part in the Christmas Carols Quiz and I'm glad you enjoyed it. :)

  18. Good Morning Mary,
I used to subscribe to Guideposts years ago. But my budget wouldn't let me do it anymore. You are making me want to subscribe to it again so I can hopefully read some of yours and Renie's writings. Maybe we can get straightened out after the first of the year, and I will be able to afford to subscribe to it again. You have a wonderful talent in writing. I enjoy reading yours and Renie's posts. It is a cold morning here. The radar showed some snow falling earlier this morning. I had to take hubby to his truck around 5:40a.m and it wasn't doing anything here where we live. Hubby did call me a few minutes ago to let me know he made it to the place where he is suppose to pick up a load in Mississippi, and said that when he was going through Memphis earlier this morning that it was sleeting over there. He said the roads were starting to get a little slippery. It has warmed up just a bit, so maybe the roads will be okay when he comes home later today. Well, take care my friend and have a great Saturday. May God Bless You and Yours.

    Hugs,
    Karen H.

  19. Hi Mary,
Thank you for telling us about your writing successes! I didn't know you were a "celebrity!" :-)

I read Guideposts and have for years, have you had any publications in the past year? I think I have saved this past years.

I want to read the other things when I get time, all the family left this morning and I'm trying to recuperate!

My grandson helped with put the picture on my profile!

  20. Joan,

I'm not sure I'm disciplined, but do love writing those family stories.

    Akelamalu,

The novel may come out one day when you have a desire to preserve precious memories.

    Paula,

If you find any of my stories in Guideposts, please let me know and if you do, I hope you enjoy reading them.

    Karen,

Guideposts have some wonderful publications. I enjoy their books and Angels on Earth. Some stories can be read on their website.

    Katherine,

The only thing I've had published by Guideposts in the last year was a story in Angels on Earth Magazine. I have recently submitted some stories to their new series. We will see what happens. They have a new editor and that can certainly make a difference.

Thank all of you Ladies for commenting. I certainly enjoy visiting with all of you.

    Blessings,
    Mary

  23. Denise,

Thank you for the lovely compliment. You brighten my days.

    Tina,

Didn't I tell you about Ideal? Sorry! That was last year, I believe. My recent successes have been more web oriented.

    Blessings to both of you.

  25. And speaking of Guideposts... One year I went to eBay and found the hardbound Guidepost books to correspond to each of my six grandchildren's birth year. Then I went to the page of their birthday and placed a ten dollar bill inside each book.

When they opened their present, all of them looked puzzled as to why I had given them those old books. Then I told them that something special happened each year of the books. I told them to figure it out.

Eventually one of the grownups came up with the surprise and told their child to look for their birthday in the book...

I often wondered if they kept the books... Years later when visiting my oldest son's home, I noticed that his wife had used the books on an end table ... laying on top of each other with a picture of her children on top of them...

So did you have anything in the 1985 (two of those),1986, 1987,1990, and 1992's daily devotion books?
