Green Thumb Sunday

It's time for Green Thumb Sunday. This is the day of the week when we share photos of our garden or house plants with our readers. Thanks to Tricia at As the Garden Grows for hosting Green Thumb Sunday. If you'd like to join in, just click HERE.

Today I would like to show and tell you about the red poppies that grow in my garden each spring. These poppies came to me quite by accident and I consider them a blessing. I love the deep, rich red color and the contrasting black centers. One spring about sevean years ago, a fern like leaf came up in my flower bed early in the spring. My husband was going to uproot it but I asked him to wait until we found out what it was. Lo and behold, this was what appeared a few weeks later. Beautiful, red poppies. I imagine the gift was bestowed on us from a bird's droppings or maybe the wind. I'm thankful for these beautiful flowers that bloom each spring in my garden. They are magnificient! One year there were 30 blooms on the plant. Since then, it hasn't done near as well, but is hanging on and this year produced ten blooms. Last year there were only four.

I can't believe that I still have flowers blooming in my garden. We've had a few hard frosts and also a bit of snow. It snowed today and as I write this, there is snow on the roofs of the cars, but little accumulated elsewhere. This is what my snapdragons and mums look like. I may have showed you this photo before, but things haven't changed.

Well, that is it for Green Thumb Sunday for this week. Join me here again next week for another episode.

Today's Thanks and Give Post

Today I'm thankful for the love of family, my online friends and the people in this blogging community. I blogged with another community where people were rude and mean. This community means a lot to me. The people here are loving and giving and so welcoming to all new bloggers. Thanks to each of you for your love, support and friendship.

Now for the giving. Did I ever tell you that I love to give? Giving brings me a lot of joy and I would like to share this lovely graphic with all of you. It is one of the postcards from my collection. Since taking this photo, I framed this postcard and gave it to a friend. I hope it brings you as much enjoyment as it has me.

  1. I agree that poppies are gorgeous. I posted a photo of a poppy field (not my photo as I don't grow them) for Veterans Day. Our weather is still mild, in the 80s, but I have very few flowers left from summer and none are up for the winter months, so it's nice to see that someone still has some.
    Happy GTS,

  2. Aina,

I can't imagine why I still have them. My flowers have done great this fall, but didn't do anything in the summer. It was too dry with too much heat, so I'm enjoying them now.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

    Blessings,
    Mary

  3. Hi Mary ~~ Love the self grown poppies. They look like the ones we wear for Remembrance Day. You were blessed when that bird or wind deposited them in your garden.
Thank you for your comments, I had not thought of 365 posts being a year's worth. I also posted about 255 on Herons Nest before it got lost.
I agree with you that we have all made some wonderful friends through
blogging and we really get to care about each other. Take care, my
    friend. Love, Merle.

  6. I do not have a green thumb, so I do not have any pictures to share! But I really do like the postcard! I love the beautiful clothes, cars, hair, etc. from the past, I think I should have been born in the 30s!

I cannot believe that any blogger would be mean to you! You are so kind and sweet. Welcome to our community!

    Hugs! Sharon

  8. Merle,

It was the community in general. Those people cursed, called each other names and then, when I posted a picture of my grandsons (they were 9 and 7 at the time) referred to them in a nasty way. I quit right then and there.

Take care, Merle. I enjoy visiting with you.

    Blessings,
    Mary

  9. Anni,

You may have a copy of the graphic. It is my gift to my blogging friends and is one of the postcards from my collection. I no longer have it but framed it and gave it to a friend who loved it. Help yourself, my friend.

    Blessings,
    Mary

  20. Mary,

What beautiful flowers you have! It's wonderful that they are still growing. Nature is amazing. I think you are right, it was probably a bird that transported the poppy to your garden. Imagine - a bird left you a gift!

I love your new image for "Mary's Writing Nook." Did that come from a postcard, too?

    Take care,
    Hugs,
    Tina

  21. Tina,

I'm glad you like the new graphic. I'm not sure I'm going to keep it. I've asked one of the very talented ladies and a good friend here to make me a header that will be eye candy for my readers. We will see.

No, the graphic wasn't from a postcard, it was on a disc of graphics that I have.

    Love you, my friend.
    Mary

  22. I love poppies and have them growing in my flowerbeds every year...I have the single poppies and the double poppies:-) Every year I have to pull a bunch of them out because if I let them they'd take over my whole flowerbed! lol How wonderful that you still have flowers blooming...mine are long gone now with all the frost we've been having. xox

  23. Pea,

I can't understand why these flowers are still blooming. All of the neighbour's flowers are gone. Maybe because there's a maple tree right in front of the flower bed on the boulevard and until today it still had all of it's leaves. Tomorrow morning I'm going to go out and take a picture of all the leaves it shed today if they are still there. There's a pile of them. I expect now the flowers will die, as they won't have that shelter from the frost.

Thanks for stopping by. I always enjoy visiting with you.

    Blessings,
    Mary
