School Resegregation and a Visit with the Grandsons

February is Black History Month and I enjoy learning about black history. Being educated in the culture of others is always enlightening, but the headlines in the morning Toronto Star shocked me. It read: Resegregation: In the wake of recent court decisions it has become the fourth "R" in American schools - reversing decades of government efforts to integrate black and white students. Hardly anyone - least of all black leaders - seems pleased.

What is going on in the world. I grew up in the 50s and 60s and knew without a doubt that segregation was wrong. I watched the NAACP fight for the rights of blacks in the US. I watched race riots on TV and was even in Detroit when one occured. That was scary.

Recently, in Toronto, a vote was taken to open a completely segregated black school. I was appalled to hear this news and now this headline in the paper jumps out at me first thing this morning. What is the world thinking?

In the same paper, on the front page, another smaller headline reads: Obama closed gap with three more wins. America is possibly going to have a historical vote later this year that will put the first black man in the Oval Office. How can these two headlines be on the same front page. Here we are making a historical step (possibly) and at the same time segregating students in our schools. Can anyone make sense of this? I would like to hear your views.

The grandsons came last night to spend the night and we had a good time. We had dinner and then they played while I cleaned up. After that, the boys got in their pajamas and we watched Snow Buddies. This is one of a series of the Air Bud movies. We shared popcorn and had a good laugh. If you haven't seen it, be sure to pick up a copy or rent it. It is a beautiful story.

After I'd finished cleaning up, I found Brandon and Meeko relaxing together. They both know that the couch is not a place for dogs, but Meeko seeks the boys' attention when they are here and this is the end result. *sigh* Meeko isn't destructive but I'd rather he didn't get on the couch and bed. When the boys are here he tends to be a little sneaky and they don't discourage it. After all, bonding with an animal is great fun.

Jordan wasn't to be seen and I went into the computer room to see what he was up to. He had asked if he could go online to one of his game sites and I'd told him if he stayed on that site he could. I've never known either of the boys to disobey about what they view online and he was indeed playing his game. He swiveled around in the chair and I snapped his picture. He is wearing the Pluto shirt he bought at Disney with his own money. He loves that shirt and wears it every chance he gets.
The boys got up this morning, had breakfast and played with their little marble toys. There are metal cards involved and when you put the plastic marble-like toys on the card, they open to reveal a man. The boys love these and enjoy playing.

The boys went home about 1pm and this Grandma was tuckered out. They certainly keep me busy while they are here and I enjoy every minute of it.
My friend Mama Bear at Bears in Exile is celebrating her anniversary. Be sure to drop in and congratulate her. She tells the story of how she and her hubby eloped and she's also posted some great photos.

I hope your weekend was as much fun as mine was. Have a great week and remember to show kindness to others. ~Blessings, Mary~

P.S. Please remember to enter my Easter Giveaway. I will be choosing the winner on February 15th.

  1. Good Afternoon Mary,
I have no clue as what this world is coming to. I do know there are alot of sick people in this world. GOD created us all in his own image. I do believe it's just the devil taking over and will continue to take over if we Christians don't do something about it. We must all treat each other as GOD treats us and the way we want to be treated. Brandon and Meeko looks very content there on the couch. Those are some very good pictures of both Brandon and Jordan. I'm glad Jordan was playing his game like you told him he could. You do have very nice Grandson's and I'm sure they obey you. I'm glad your SIL took Michelle out and they got to have some quality time together. That is always a good thing to do. I know I enjoy my quality time with my DH. I would like to enter your Giveaway Mary, but for the life of me, I can't even remember Easter when I was a child. I can remember Easter with our girls, but not of me. I know there are some, but I guess I'm too old and they are filed way back yonder. LOL. I finally put up a new post this morning. My DH and his Uncle left out this morning, so hopefully things will get back to normal around here. Take care my friend and have a great day. Get you some much needed rest. May God Bless You and Yours. I went by Anni's yesterday and sung Happy Birthday to her. LOL. Actually I typed it, but I was singing it in my head.

    Love & Hugs,
    Karen H.

  2. Karen,

Yes, Christians need to unite. We are all created in God's image and I was appalled to see this morning's headlines.

Please enter the giveaway and tell about your most memorable Easter with your girls. That will do fine. I wouldn't think of leaving anyone out just because they had no memory of a childhood Easter.

Take care, my friend. Praying for your family and for DH and his uncle.

    Blessings,
    Mary

  4. It is so sad to see the world revert back. You would think that we would have learned our lesson by now! I was shocked to hear about that school in Toronto! Just when you think we're moving forward with the potential of a black president.... :(

  5. Hello Mary,
In the mid 70's Hubby and I paid a visit to the burned out section in Detroit. Very scary. No one living there and no one cleaning up.You have wonderful grandsons. I bet you all had a good time.

Would you enter me in your Easter giveaway. I remember as a small child going to my Grandparents farm on Easter for an Easter Egg hunt. This was the only time as a child I got to visit the out buildings looking for eggs. What great fun my cousins and I had.

  6. Hi Mary,

Glad you got to visit with the boys! Oh, isn't that odd about the segregation? It doesn't make much sense to me either.

And I wanted to let you know I finally finished that meme you tagged me for. It's up now. :-)

    Have a smashing Sunday!

    Smiles,
    Michele

  8. I have given up trying to figure what is going on in peoples heads and hearts. What a mess.
Bottom line--nothing is going to fix the mess of the heart except God.
Until then we will continue to view people through minds that tell us we are right.
    Sad.
Glad you had a great time with your men.:)

  11. Didn't Martin Luther King Jr. in his famous "I have a Dream" speech talk about not being judged by the color of your skin? To resegregate schools by skin color certainly is a slap in the face to his memory.

Sounds like you had a wonderful time with your grandsons...and that Meeko got some extra lovin'.

  12. Some time it seems we take one step forward and one step back.
But in a whole we are actual becoming more tolerant.

  13. Mary,

It is a sad puzzle to realize that headlines about Barack Obama, a black man who has a real chance to become president of the US on the same page with plans to segregate schools. People of all faiths, a variety of beliefs, and cultures have worked hard through the years to bring racial equality and break down prejudices of all kinds. Much progress has been accomplished, especially in the minds of Americans. Otherwise, our two top contenders for the democratic nomination would not be a black man and a woman! However, the task of bringing equality and civil rights to all people regardless of their religion, spirituality, lack of religious affiliation, race, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation has not been completed. All of us need to continue to work at making this a world where everyone is treated equally under the law and by society.

What a wonderful day you had with the boys! Your photos are terrific. Jordan must really have been concentrating on his game - it shows in the intensity of his facial expression!! The sleepy duo on the couch is adorable!

    Love & Hugs,
    Tina
