Green Thumb Sunday and a Bit of This and That

It's Green Thumb Sunday, hosted by Tricia at As the Garden Grows. If you'd like to participate, just click on the link to find out how.

It's been a while since I participated in Green Thumb Sunday. I'm not sure why. I guess it was just something I overlooked. I didn't mean it to happen, as I enjoy showing what is growing in my home and garden. So this week I'm back.

In October, Brandon gave me a lovely spider plant for my birthday. I was just a little thing and he gave it to me in his mother's cat planter, which she told him was fine. It had a couple of sprouts on it and that was it. Look at it now.

It's soon going to have to be transplanted. I'm not always good with plants but it seems anything that Brandon plants grows. He must use his green thumb. I am very proud of this plant. When spring arrives, I'm going to transplant it and use Miracle G*o potting mix. That way it might stand a chance. Or maybe I'll just invite Brandon over to transplant it for me. When I do, I will give Michelle back her cat planter.

In other news we are snowed in. Not really, but no one is going out unless they have to. It started snowing here about 2:30 pm on Friday and has not stopped yet. It is to continue until about 3 am and then we are to get a break until the middle of the week when we are to get more snow. When I took Meeko out tonight, we have about a foot of freshly fallen snow.

Even though all this snow makes it inconvenient for people to get around, I'm really glad that we've had a snowy winter. Snow is good for the earth and helps fertilize the soil. The moisture from the snow is retained somewhat in the soil and helps to prevent erosion. This is all good for our planet.

Meeko is also happy that we had this big storm. He loves the winter and wanted to be out in it today. We did let him play in it, but brought him in from time to time so he wouldn't suffer frost bite on the tips of his ears or on his toes. Yes, he is a northern breed but caution is still recommended.

This was Meeko out at 10:30 am on Saturday morning. We have a lot more snow than that now

This is a view of the back portion of my car. This was also taken at 10:30 am on Saturday morning.

I am looking forward to spring. Though I'm grateful that the earth has received the snow it needs to keep things in balance, it's been a very snowy winter and I'm ready to see some flowers growing in my garden and get my hands back into the soil.
I've been working on a little project. It's something that I've never tried before - altered art. I took a piece of canvas, sponge painted it with Wedgewood blue paint. I let that dry and then used a picture from a vintage greeting card, burned the edges and glued it onto the canvas. It says, From my home to yours! I then glued two old stamps to the upper left and bottom right corners and two vintage buttons to the top right and bottom left corners. I don't think it turned out too bad for a first attempt. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it, as my kitchen is done in greens and whites. For the time being I will put it away and then one of these days I will find just the right home for it. It was a fun project to do while I was staying inside keeping warm and cozy. It's always nice to be artistic and creative.

Hope everyone is safe and staying warm. Please don't travel on the roads if you are in an area where the roads are treacherous from the storms. This storm has hit parts of the US and Canada. Travel is not recommended unless absolutely necessary.

Spend time with a child today. Give him or her a hug, read a book or play a board game. If you have no children living in your home, phone a child and brighten up his day. Kids need to know they are important. ~Blessings, Mary~

  2. Hi Mary,

I'm running late with everything. My son is here this weekend and we've been gone a lot. Your spider plant is beautiful, and I love the picture of Meeko. He is a beautiful boy!

Our snow has melted again, thank goodness. Have a wonderful Sunday, and stay safe and warm!

    Love and Hugs,

  3. Good Morning Mary,
I hope this finds you feeling better today. I hope you are slowly getting your strength back as well. Your Spider Plant is beautiful. I'm sure Brandon would be very happy to help you out with it. Wow, that is alot of Snow you have there. Meeko looks so content in it. I remember my Sister's dog always loved being out in the Snow when we would get Snow. He was just like a kid and would run and play in it. I'm so glad you are staying in and not getting out on the roads. Most of our Snow melted yesterday but there is still a bit outside this morning. It will all melt today as the temperature will get near 50 degrees. By mid-week we are to be in tht 60's. I love the plaque you made. You did a great job on it. I'm sure you will find a good home for it soon. I sure wish I was creative, but I'm not. I do enjoy looking at what other people have made tho. I put up some pictures this morning of the girls in the Snow yesterday. Well, I took the first one and then my DH hogged the camera the rest of the day. LOL. We didn't get to move yesterday. The Snowplows cleared the main highway off, but the side streets still had some snow on them especially where there was some shade. My DH called our Landlord yesterday and told him we would move this coming weekend and he said that would be fine. Take care my friend and have a great day. May God Bless You and Yours. You are so right, every child needs to know they are loved and feel it in their hearts as well.

    Love & Hugs,
    Karen H.

  4. Good morning Mary, wow... you did get a lot of snow..It is a sunny day here with a temperature of 32... cold for us in the south....

I love your spider plant.. My mom is good at keeping plants alive.I have a hard time ; either I over water them or don't water them enough..

You are so talented with art work...I am going to teach myself how to crochet...

Have a great Sunday and stay warm.

Sounds like Brandon is akin to my Mother. She could grow things on rocks. I would let Brandon do the transplanting. We had about two inches of snow. A pitful amount to your standards. Maggie had a grand time running in the snow so I bet Meeko was in doggie heaven with so much snow. Take care of yourself. Peace

  6. Came to visit with GTS. I wish someone could make my house plants proliferate like that! Especially spider plants, since they are so good for your homes health.

  7. Hi Mary, sorry I have not stopped by in awhile. You know how life can get at times. I love your spider plant, but mostly the ceramic cat planter. I love cats as you know:) We have not had the snow YEA!! It has missed us lately, we can see our grass and my tulips and daffodils are popping up a little. I am so happy!!! I will have to post a picture before the snow comes again. God Bless

  8. Mary,
Beautiful plant! I think the cat planter is so cute.

Spring will get here. Our snow has finally melted, and March winds will blow the winter away.

I think working on craft projects helps the time pass. Your project is lovely. I used to quilt. Stay busy! Springs-a-comming!

  9. Well, it's cloudy here and chilly....but we're not buried in snow. I bet Meeko loves it!!! It's his kinda territory now. :::smiles::: I like the idea of your new project you made. That's a clever idea. But.....one foot of snow? Oh my.

Ya, Obama won the delegates in Wyoming yesterday, but still...neither one [Clinton OR Obama] can win without going on to Denver in the summer. They're just too close to call, unlike McCain who ran away with the delegate count. I think this coming Tuesday it's Mississippi for the Democrats now, and it's more than likely a 'shoe in' for Obama. Right now, the way it is with no win until the Democratic Convention, I think it's a waste of time for those who are running. But hey...whadda I know?

I LOVE the spider plant. And the planter. That's precious. Of course, you know I love kitties!! Bud had to go to the store this morning to get shaving cream and I went outdoors to the garden shop and picked up an ivy. :::keeping my fingers crossed I don't smother it with overkill:::

It was great to have to stop by as always. I think I'm gonna get offline for now and go crochet some.

Stay warm and dry. Hope your cold like/flu like symptoms are gone by now!!!

  10. Ohmygosh! Look at all that SNOW!!! I’m sure Meeko is in his element, but I’m sure you’re ready for Spring to come. Your creative art project and Show & Tell Spider plant in the cat planter are nifty. Even though it’s warm & sunny here … it’s windy and I don’t plan on driving anywhere because it’s the weekend. I let those who work have Saturdays and Sundays because I can run my errands on weekdays when they’re at work.
    Hugs and blessings,

  11. Mary,
I recommended your blog to someone recently because of the common connection of grandsons with autism.

  12. What a cute little plant! I have what is known in the family as a "brown thumb". I cause every plant I own to wither and die. I'd probably kill the outdoor ones as well butI pay a neighbor boy to take care of my yard for gas money for his first car. We both win.

The big snow in the Ohio Valley missed my town by 20 miles. Thanks goodness.

    Big hug.

  13. I can't believe it has babies when it is that small. After you put a little dirt in the pot, add some Ose-cal. Use a planter that hangs.

Would you be interested in participating in a cirle journal? It would travel by mail and spend 2 weeks at each place, you'd write in it daily and add pictures, quotes, stickers and poems.

  14. We had quite a bit of snow this year.
I am one who sort of names my flowerbeds and the patriotic flower bed which I thought would be last one uncovered but I was wrong and notice we have some tulips popping up.

I had a mulmute poochie who just loved the snow. Now we have border collie and he ok with the snow but my Australian shepard is wimp and doesn't care for the snow.

  15. We heard about your storms on the radio and television today Mary. I sure hope that everything is okay. I think that this year you are getting all the snow that we usually get.

Take care my friend, stay warm and safe.

    God bless.

  16. Hi Mary,

I love the spider plant that Brandon gave to you. It looks great, nice and healthy. If it's doing this great during the winter, it should really be spectacular once the warmer weather and long sunny days arrive!

What a snowy winter we both have had! The concern here is that we have so much snow, especially up north that there may be serious flooding if the melting and spring rains occur together.

I'm thinking "spring" for both of us, my friend! :-)

    Hugs,
    Tina
